Our Story

Two American originals. Sixty-plus years of good food. One roof.

Every great meal has a story behind it. Ours is really three stories — a pancake house that became a breakfast legend, a neighborhood grill that became an American institution, and the idea that brought them together at your table.

1958 · Toluca Lake, California

A pancake house opens its doors

On July 7, 1958, brothers Al and Jerry Lapin opened the very first International House of Pancakes in Toluca Lake, California. The idea was simple: make breakfast something worth gathering for. The pancakes did the rest.

From that single restaurant, IHOP grew into America's breakfast table — more than 1,650 restaurants across all 50 states and around the world, serving world-famous buttermilk pancakes and breakfast at any hour to anyone who wants it. Study breaks, late nights, Sunday mornings, big wins, long talks: for over six decades, it's all happened over a stack of pancakes.

1980 · Decatur, Georgia

The neighborhood gets a grill & bar

On November 19, 1980, Bill and T.J. Palmer opened a restaurant in Decatur, Georgia with a memorable mouthful of a name — T.J. Applebee's Rx for Edibles & Elixirs. Their vision: a place with a neighborhood-pub feel, friendly service, and honest food at a fair price.

The name got shorter — Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar — and the idea got bigger, growing into one of the largest casual-dining brands in the world. Riblets, burgers, and a cold drink after work: for more than 40 years, Applebee's has been where the neighborhood eats good.

2007 · One family

Two icons join forces

In 2007, IHOP's parent company acquired Applebee's, bringing both brands into one family — known today as Dine Brands Global. Breakfast royalty and the neighborhood grill were suddenly siblings. It was only a matter of time before somebody asked the obvious question: what if they lived together?

2025 · The dual era

Two favorites, one roof

The dual-branded concept — one building, both restaurants, both menus — was born overseas and proved itself fast. In February 2025, the first dual-branded Applebee's + IHOP in the United States opened its doors in Seguin, Texas, and the idea took off: pancakes at sunrise, ribs and cold drinks after dark, and no one at the table has to compromise.

Today · Your neighborhood

That's where we come in

We operate a growing family of dual Applebee's + IHOP restaurants — proud to be part of the first wave bringing this idea to neighborhoods like yours. Two kitchens, both full menus, one table, all day long.

But here's the part we care about most: we're local. The people running these restaurants are part of your community, and when you tell us something — a compliment, a complaint, an idea — it comes straight to our team, and we act on it. That's a promise, and it's the reason this website exists.

Come hungry. Leave happy.

Browse both menus, find the location nearest you, or tell us about your last visit — we read every message.
